The donut shop at 500 E. Figzel Ct. has new owners. Aaron Spaan and longtime girlfriend and business partner, Kari Hoff, recently bought Mary Lee’s Bakery & Daylight Donuts. The business is now known as Flyboy Donuts. Spaan, who is a retired airplane captain, inspired the name. Spaan also created the logo, a donut sporting wings and sunglasses, with the help of a graphic designer from India.
So, what inspired the couple to buy a donut shop? “Well, they’ve got great donuts here,” Spaan said. “We thought it would be cheaper for us to own (the business) than come here and eat donuts every day. If we didn’t love the donuts here, we wouldn’t have become the shop owners,” Hoff added.

Miles competes at Olympic Trials
South Dakota assistant coach Derek Miles, and Tea resident, is competing in pole vault at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. Miles, a 1996 USD graduate and member of the Coyote Sports Hall of Fame, is aiming for his third trip to the Olympics in the event.
Miles is the pole vault coach for the Coyotes, and helped sophomore Bethany Buell and freshman Emily Grove not only earn first-team All-American status at the NCAA National Championships earlier this month, but also earn berths at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Buell and Grove will compete in the women’s pole vault finals on Sunday in Eugene.
Miles’ quest for a third Olympic berth begins with Monday’s qualifying round.
