Titans capture Region 2A golf title
For the first time in school history, the Tea Area High School golf team captured the Region 2A title Monday, Sept. 28 at Bakker Crossing.
The win qualifies the entire team for the State Tournament for the second year in a row after making history last year with a third place finish at Regions.
“This was our first Region 2A title for Tea Area,” said Titan head coach Jason Sudenga. “The kids all played under their scoring average for the year.”
Brock Murphy and Cody Peterson both had personal bests for a tournament round taking second and third place respectively at Regions.
Murphy, a freshman, shot a 41 on the front nine and a 34 on the back nine to finish with a 75 on the day, placing second, just behind Dakota Valley’s Jameson Bull who shot a 71.
Peterson, a junior, shot a 40 on the front nine and a 36 on the back to finish with a 76, placing third.
“It was nice to play on your home track and that gave us a nice advantage,” said Sudenga.
Also medaling at Regions was Tea Area’s Brian Finn and Kolby Newborg who finished 11th and 12th at Regions, respectively.
Finn finished the day with an 92, shooting a 44 on the front nine and a 38 on the back. Newborg shot a 43 on the front nine and a 39 on the back to also finish with an 82.
Tea Area’s Zain Baus also competed at Regions scoring a 112, shooting a 59 on the front nine and a 53 on the back.
As a team, Tea Area led the way with their score of 315 to capture the Region Title. Sioux Falls Christian took second (326), Canton third (328), Vermillion fourth (330), Dakota Valley fifth (333), West Central sixth (340), Beresford seventh (347), Elk Point Jefferson eighth (354) and Lennox ninth (367).
The 2015 Boys’ State A Golf Tournament will be held at Pine Hills Country Club in Milbank, Oct. 5-6
