Back to Back Region Champs: Titan golf team captures Region 2A title, prepares for State Tournament

On Monday, Sept. 26 the Tea Area High School golf team continued to make history—claiming the Region 2A Title for the second straight year at Central Valley Golf Course in Hartford.

The back to back title was captured by team members Brock Murphy, Kolby Newborg, Brian Finn, Cody Peterson, and Cooper Leslie.

“The kids played really well, it was cold in the morning and the wind started blowing on the back nine,” said Titan head coach Jason Sudenga. “One of our goals was to defend our region title and we did that.”

Leading the Titans in their quest for State were Murphy and Newborg. Murphy shot a 78 on the day to take third at Regions. He shot a 38 on the front nine and a 40 on the back. Newborg was right behind Murphy, finishing in fourth place with a score of 78, shooting a 37 on the front nine and a 40 on the back nine.

The two seniors, Finn and Peterson, finished 13th and 23rd respectively. Finn shot an 86 on the day (43, 43) and Peterson shot a 91 (44, 47).

Eighth grader, Leslie, finished in 42nd place with his score of 114 (55, 59).

Winning Regions was Canton’s Jake Peterson who beat West Central’s Devlin Rue on the second hole of a sudden death playoff to take the medalist honors in the Region 2A Tournament. They both shot a 77 after 18 holes of play.

Tea Area won the team title with a team total of 333, qualifying the entire team for State. Canton took second, Sioux Falls Christian third, West Central fourth, Beresford fifth, Vermillion sixth, Dakota Valley seventh, Elk Point Jefferson eighth, and Lennox finished ninth as a team.
