Destination: Dome - Titans defeat Dell Rapids, head to Championship game Saturday
For the first time in school history, the Tea Area Titan football team find themselves in the State A Championship game. The Titans historic season continued last week as they defeated Dell Rapids, 32-21 in semi-final action to advance to the Finals.
“The team came out and played hard against a good Dells team,” said Titan head coach Craig Clayberg.
The Titans got on the board first, scoring on a Adam Heien 29 yard run. Kade Stearns point after was blocked but the Titans had a 6-0 lead after one quarter of play.
The back and forth battle continued in the second quarter with the Quarriers threatening but Tea managing to keep them at bay. Kendon Rensch scored in the second quarter for the Titans on a two yard run and Stearns point after was successful to give the Titans a 13-0 lead.
However, Dells answered back this time, scoring on a 39 yard touchdown pass from Hunter Hansen to Anthony Miller. The point after was good, putting Dell Rapids within six.
It wasn’t long before the Quarriers were threatening to score again before Logan Hoon made the play of the game. Hoon stripped the ball from the Quarriers’ quarterback and returned it 94 yards for the score, shifting the momentum of the game.
“That was the game-changer for us,” said Clayberg.
In the second half, the Titans were ready to roll, scoring twice in the third, once on a Payton Conrad four yard carry and again on a Heien 57 yard run to extend their lead to 32-7.
“We came out in the second half and really dominated up front,” said Clayberg. “It was a great win against a very good Dells team.”
