Winners in student video contest recognized
Winners in the first “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing” video contest for middle-schoolers in the Sioux Falls region were recognized Feb. 13 at the Student Video Contest Awards Ceremony held at the Jeschke Fine Arts Center on the campus of the University of Sioux Falls. Those in attendance had an opportunity to see three award-winning videos submitted by student teams. Participating schools were from Tea, Baltic, Mount Vernon, Parker, Edison (Sioux Falls), Deuel, Harrisburg, Yankton and De Smet, plus the Brookings Boys & Girls Club.
It was a huge night for Tea Area Students who received a trophy for the Viewer’s Choice Award, as well as top honors with the Videographer in Excellence trophy.
The local team of eighth grade students from the Tea Area Middle School collaborated with a local manufacturer to create a two to two and a half minute video about manufacturing careers. The Tea Area Middle School students paired up with Chad Ulvestad’s manufacturing business Specialized Machine.
Each school participating in the contest received a GoPro Hero 4 camera and accessories. A contest requirement was that the video had to be filmed using the camera. The students could pick the editing software of their choice. The contest began in October with the final cut due in January.
Jamie Ihnen said, “I was there to guide the process and to make sure we were meeting deadlines. The students did the work and used their creativity to develop an extraordinary video. They are a motivated, talented and fun group of students to work with.”
