Sport highlight: Murphy sets record

Success on the golf course is no stranger to Tea Area Senior, Brock Murphy, and this season is no exception.

Murphy, who claimed his fourth individual title in a row this past Friday, also set a new school record in Huron.

Last Friday, Aug. 24 the Titans traveled to Huron to compete in the 2018 Huron Invitational. The Tournament featured 15 teams, 12 of which were Class AA schools.

The competition was strong but Murphy shot three under par to finish the Tournament with a 69, winning by four shots and setting a new school record for the lowest score on 18 holes by a Titan golfer.

“Brock has played some outstanding golf to start the season. He is thinking his way around the golf course very well and not making a lot of mistakes,” said Titan head coach Jason Sudenga. “He has put in a lot of hard work and it is paying off.”

Murphy’s performance thus far this season has earned him Tea Area Sports Boosters Athlete of the Week honors, sponsored by Tea Weekly, Squealers, Octane Ink and the Tea Area Sports Boosters.

He has won all four events he has played in this season. Shooting a 73 at Rocky Run in Dell Rapids and most recently, the 69 at Broadland Creek, to win the Huron Invite.

“He is the first one to get there and the last one to leave typically,” said Sudenga. “He has shown great leadership and is helping the younger kids with their golf game.”

This is Murphy’s sixth year on the Titans’ golf team.

Sudenga is also impressed with Murphy’s positive attitude and noted his actions speak for themselves.

“He is always working hard on his golf game and the other kids see how hard he works and that has spilled over unto some of the younger kids,” Sudenga added.

Also competing for Tea Area at Huron was Cooper Leslie who shot an 86 on the day to take 45th. Eric Munson finished with an 89 to take 58th, Cooper Dixon shot a 96 for 74th place, Keeton Newborg a 99 for 78th place and Sam Curry a 108 for 85th place.

The Titans will travel to Madison on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
