Tea Area’s Legacy Elementary School has been named one of four 2026 South Dakota Blue Ribbon Schools, recognizing the school’s strong student achievement and commitment to helping students take ownership of their learning.

The South Dakota Department of Education announced the 2026 Blue Ribbon Schools last week. Schools are selected based on longitudinal data demonstrating high proficiency in English Language Arts and mathematics. Elementary and middle schools must also show notable success in attendance, while high schools are evaluated on graduation rates.

The other 2026 recipients are Corsica-Stickney Elementary School, Mount Vernon Middle School and O’Gorman High School.

For Legacy Elementary, the recognition reflects an instructional approach focused on helping students understand and take ownership of their own learning.

“Legacy Elementary in Tea Area School District grounds its approach in instructional systems that evolve and grow to meet the needs of every student,” said South Dakota Secretary of Education Dr. Joseph Graves. “The students develop their own learning charts and portfolios to see their growth while becoming active participants in their own learning.”

The Tea Area School District celebrated the recognition on its Facebook page, emphasizing that the honor represents the work of the entire Legacy community.

Teachers and administrators work with students to set goals, track progress, and identify strategies that help them succeed. Teachers then use what they learn from students and from their colleagues to make instructional decisions and determine the next steps in learning.

“Collaboration is a big part of who we are, and student success is a TEAM effort,” the district stated.

That team extends beyond teachers and administrators, according to the district. General education teachers, custodial and maintenance staff, nutrition staff, special education teachers and support staff, interventionists, specials teachers, administrators, the administrative assistant, nurse, counselor, and others all contribute to the educational experience at Legacy.

The district also recognized the important role played by families in student success.

“Our families are an important part of the team as well,” the district stated. “They value a high-quality education, support their children’s learning, and make sure students are at school each day, ready to learn.”

For Legacy Elementary, the district said the recognition provides an opportunity to celebrate the collective efforts of students, staff, and families.

“We get to celebrate what happens when students, staff, and families work together with a common purpose,” the district stated. “Congratulations to the students, staff, and families of Legacy Elementary! We are incredibly proud of you!”
