Tea Area High School sophomore Beckett Martens made school history June 18-21 by becoming the first Titan to compete at the prestigious New Balance Nationals Track and Field Championships at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

The annual meet features some of the nation’s top high school track and field athletes, with competitors earning their spots by meeting rigorous qualifying standards during the outdoor season.

Martens qualified for the boys’ Championship 100-meter dash after a record-breaking sophomore season. Earlier this spring, he set a new Tea Area High School school record in the event and posted the fourth-fastest 100-meter time in South Dakota. The only athletes ahead of him in the state rankings were seniors.

Competing against more than 100 of the nation’s fastest sprinters, Martens finished 40th overall in the Championship 100-meter preliminaries, which were held Thursday, June 18.

Among athletes who were sophomores or younger, he placed fifth, an impressive showing on the national stage.

Tea Area head track and field coach Ryan Decker said Martens’ accomplishment is significant not only for the athlete but for the entire Titans program.

“It is incredibly significant to have an athlete compete at a national meet like the New Balance Nationals,” Decker said. “These meets feature the top track talent in the nation, and to have Beckett finish as high as he did on a national scene shows the talent he possesses and the work he has put in. It creates positive energy for our program and shows that our athletes can compete at the highest level. We are incredibly proud of Beckett and excited for what the future holds for him.”

With two years of high school competition still ahead of him, Martens has already established himself among the state’s elite sprinters while proving he can compete against some of the nation’s best. His appearance at the New Balance Nationals marks another milestone for the Tea Area track and field program and provides momentum heading into future seasons.
