By Anne Homan

After qualifying at Region, Tea Area High School’s Izzy McNaughton competed in the 2022 State A Girls Golf Tournament held at Bakker Crossing on Monday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 7.

McNaughton had a strong showing, shooting a 91 on both Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, McNaughton shot a 45 on the front nine and a 46 on the back. Her day was highlighted by four pars. On Tuesday, McNaughton shot a 46 on the front nine and a 45 on the back, with a birdie on her back nine.

Her two day total of 182, tied her for 17th place among the top golfers in the State. Her 17th place finish was also a Tea Area High School girls’ golf record, with the previous best finish by a Titan girl golfer being 20th in 2007.

Titan head golf coach, Rick Willemssen, was proud of McNaughton’s performance.

“She is a girl who loves to golf, wants to be good at golf, and loves to compete! She is a golfer who stays composed, and doesn’t let one bad hole affect her whole round,” said Willemssen. “She maintains a positive attitude, even during the tough stretches, which bodes well for her future in this game.”

McNaughton just finished her freshman year at Tea Area, she moved into the area this year from Presho.

Winning the 2022 State A individual title was Olivia Sorlie from Canton. She shot a 75 on day one and an 80 on day two for a two day total of 155. The team title went to Sioux Falls Christian.
