For more than 50 years, Meals on Wheels have been partnering with residents around the area to help fight hunger and combat isolation. Now, Meals on Wheels is asking for volunteers to keep this vital program up and running for all those who rely on it most.

Meals on Wheels has been serving communities since 1954 with the mission of helping seniors live healthier, more independent lives at home.

“In Sioux Falls, our local program began in 1968 thanks to Lutheran Social Services. We serve older, homebound adults, aged 60 or older, regardless of income, ensuring that no one is turned away if they can’t afford to donate,” said Nutrition and Transportation Manager at Active Generations, Samantha Locke.

Locke and her team at Active Generations need more help to make sure the meals are delivered each day and are reaching out for the public’s help.

“We’re always looking to grow our team of volunteers to ensure we can consistently meet the needs of our growing client base, even one new volunteer can make a big difference,” she said.

Meals on Wheels relies on 40 volunteers each day serving the 550 meals that are delivered each weekday to seniors in Brandon, Harrisburg, Sioux Falls, and Tea. While the number of meals served is high, the streamlined process is quick and efficient to be mindful of volunteers’ time.

“Volunteers either help pack meals or deliver them, packing is from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., and meal delivery is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,” Locke said.

Delivery drivers are the biggest need for Meals on Wheels at this time with the Tea route being less than one hour and having around ten stops.

“Requirements for the position include a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle, but beyond that, we welcome volunteers of all ages who are willing to serve with compassion and consistency,” she said.

Locke believes that for many homebound seniors, these meals are the main source of daily nutrition, and in some cases, daily connection.

“Meals on Wheels provides more than food, it delivers care, connection, and safety. For some, the volunteer delivering their meal is the only person they’ll see that day, or even that week, this program helps fight hunger and isolation at the same time,” Locke said.

Meals on Wheels works hard to ensure both the volunteers and those receiving the meals are equally valued in the program.

“We understand that volunteers have busy lives, so we offer flexible scheduling. Some people help once a week, others once a month, it’s all appreciated the same. We even have a substitute email list where volunteers can pick up routes as they are available,” she said.

Active Generations believes in building lasting connections in the community and every person can make a difference if everyone works together.

“Volunteering with Meals on Wheels is a meaningful way to connect with others, bother seniors receiving the meals and fellow volunteers. It’s a great opportunity to get out of the house or office, enjoy some fresh air, and break up your routine with something rewarding. You’ll make a tangible difference in someone’s life, build a sense of community, and be part of something truly impactful,” Locke said.
