Tea Area senior Matthew Rogers left a mark—literally and historically—at the Last Chance Meet hosted by Sioux Falls O’Gorman on Thursday, May 22. Competing in the triple jump for the very first time, Rogers shattered the Tea Area school record on his opening attempt. Rogers wasn’t done, though. On his second attempt, he went even farther—soaring 44 feet, 1.5 inches—cementing his name atop the record books. Rogers surpassed the previous record set back in 2011 by Lucas Ortmeier, a State Champion in the event. The impressive jump placed him second overall at the meet and fifth in the current South Dakota Class AA rankings heading into the 2025 SDHSAA State Track and Field Championships, set for May 29–31 at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Several other Titans delivered standout performances, with many posting personal bests and top-five finishes.

Eighth-grader Jayna VanLaecken continued to impress in the hurdles, clocking a personal-best 15.86 seconds in the 100m hurdles to take sixth place. She later claimed first in the 300m hurdles, improving her personal best to 44.97 seconds—good for second in the AA state rankings.

Brooklyn Reiners, a junior, wasn’t far behind. She took seventh in the 100m hurdles with a personal-best time of 16.19 and seventh in the 300m hurdles with another PR of 48.44.

Sydney Stahlecker sprinted to a win in the girls’ 100m dash (12.45) and placed second in the 400m (58.34). Fellow sprinter Mya Neuhardt, a senior, earned third in the 100m (12.87), while also setting a season-best in that event and a personal-best 1:01.09 in the 400m.

In the boys’ sprints, freshman Beckett Martens continued to turn heads with a personal-best 11.31 in the 100m (12th place) and 22.85 in the 200m (12th place). Junior Juv Banza was just behind him in the 200m, recording a personal-best 22.86.

Rogers also clocked a 15.12 in the 110m hurdles, finishing second in that race. Sophomore Dawood Toto added a top-five finish of his own in the 300m hurdles, placing fifth with a 41.91.

Distance standout Jaycie Babb ran a 5:09.12 in the 1600m to take second and moved up to ninth in Class AA. She also placed eighth in the 800m (2:21.40). Ninth-grader Grace Bialas (2:24.51) and freshman Abby Hilleson (2:27.86) rounded out a strong showing in the girls’ 800m.

In the boys’ 400m, senior Jacob Mueller grabbed fifth with a personal-best 51.65. Junior Jack Campbell also delivered a PR in the 800m (2:02.61), as did Reid Hammerquist (10:15.10) and Dawson Lowery (11:20.72) in the 3200m.

Throwers and jumpers also got in on the PR action. In the girls’ javelin, Daphne Decker placed fourth (97-8), and in the boys’ shot put, Tyson DeYoung threw a personal-best 42-9.5, while Gage Little had a PR of 40-4. Quentin Maag, a freshman, jumped a personal-best 18-0.5 in the boys’ long jump.
