Manufacturing is undergoing a dramatic transformation, thanks to innovations in robotics, automation, and advanced fabrication technologies. These changes are not only reshaping the production floor—they’re also creating exciting new career paths that didn’t exist a decade ago.

To help students see the future of high-tech manufacturing up close, DeGeest Corporation in Tea, SD—recognized as the region’s leading facility for robotics and automation—opened its doors to 55 welding students from Lake Area Technical College on Thursday, April 17. The group toured DeGeest and its partner company, LestaUSA, for an immersive experience that connected classroom training with real-world applications.

The tour gave students an inside look at how cutting-edge technology is being used in everything from welding and finishing to robotic automation. For many, it was an eye-opening introduction to the vast range of career options in modern manufacturing.

“Being out and seeing the different types of equipment and machinery in production helps students find careers they are most passionate about,” said Derek DeGeest, President of DeGeest and LestaUSA. “The only way we’re going to inspire the future generation in the trades is if we show them how awesome it is.”

Founded in 1976, DeGeest Corporation is a third-generation family-owned business that has embraced change through decades of technological progress.

By encouraging tours and hands-on learning, the company aims to invest in workforce development and support the next generation of skilled professionals.

“It’s an investment in our future, aligning with our commitment to a Stronger Standard for our industry and communities,” added Alicia DeGeest, Marketing, Media and Community Relations.

Educators accompanying the students emphasized how experiences like these help keep training programs current and relevant in a fast-moving industry. Students walked away with a clearer vision of how their welding skills can evolve alongside the technology—and how they can play a key role in the future of manufacturing.
