The Tea Area High School girls’ soccer program will take the field this season under new leadership, as Jasmin Sumic steps into the head coach role following the departure of Mark Anderson, who led the Titans for 12 years.
“Taking over this program at Tea as head coach is truly special for me,” Sumic said. “I have been part of this team’s journey for the past seven years as an assistant coach, so I know firsthand the heart, the tradition, and the potential that lives here. Stepping into this role, I am excited to build on that foundation and push us to new heights.”
Sumic, who has more than two decades of coaching experience in South Dakota, said his focus goes beyond the scoreboard.
“My previous experience as a head coach taught me how to create a championship mindset,” he explained. “This is more than just soccer to me; it is about shaping a culture where players believe in themselves, help each other, and represent our community and our school with pride. I am ready to give everything I have to make sure this program keeps growing and competing at the highest level.”
He will be assisted by two former Tea Area High School soccer players—Brooke Piper, who has several years of coaching experience, and Kaitlin Kuhnert, who joins the staff as a new assistant coach.
Sumic’s playing career began in Europe, where he competed at a semi-professional level. At age 17, he earned nine appearances with the U19 Croatian national team (under Yugoslavia).
Since moving to the United States 25 years ago, he has coached club and high school teams including Great Plains, Dakota Gold, Tempo, DASC, West Central, Roosevelt, and most recently Tea Area High School.
While the Titans graduated several key players last year, Sumic is confident in the talent and work ethic of the returning squad and incoming newcomers. Senior captain Sage Hoffman will lead the team, joined by a deep roster of returning players and emerging talent.
