Titan boys fall in close one to Sioux City East

On Friday, Feb. 14 the Tea Area High School boys’ basketball team hosted Sioux City East. The Titans trailed early but fought back, outscoring Sioux City East 21-15 in the third and 19-15 in the fourth; however, Tea Area eventually dropped the game 66-62.

“This was a very fun high school basketball game. SC East is one of the top teams in all of Iowa and their size and athleticism was tough to overcome at times, but we really held our own and gave ourselves a chance to win at the end,” said Titan head coach Drew Weber. “We obviously did not shoot the ball to our standard and that played a big part in the loss, but we also did a lot of really good things offensively that I was hoping to see improved. We have another big week ahead as we start narrowing in on the postseason.”

Three Titans were in double figures with Marshall Smythe leading the way with 22 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Grifin Wiebenga finished with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Gavin Shawd scored 13 points, grabbed eight rebounds, had two assists and four steals.

Jaxson Merrigan provided eight points, grabbed six rebounds, and had two assists.

Mitch Grant finished with five points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Tea Area was set to host Yankton on Friday, Feb. 21 in double header action with the Tea Area girls. The Titan boys are scheduled to tip-off at 8 p.m. They will be on the road on Tuesday, Feb 25 when they travel to Sioux Falls Washington for a 7 p.m. game.
