Titan girls defeat Beresford in opening round of Regions

On Tuesday, Feb 20 the Tea Area High School girls’ basketball team hosted Beresford in the opening round of the Region 4A playoffs. 

The Titans used a balanced scoring attack and strong defense to get the 72-39 victory. 

Tea Area outscored Beresford 22-4 in the third quarter to put the game away. 

Three Titans were in double figures on the night. Katie Vasecka (pictured above) finished with 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. She went seven of 14 from the field. 

Mara Grant finished with a double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. She also had one assist and three steals. 

Haidyn West contributed 19 points in the win, hitting four three-pointers in the game. She also had four assists and two steals. 

Ellie Clayberg finished the night with eight points, three rebounds, one assist and four steals. Reese Hammerquist had three points, four rebounds, and two steals. Natalie Gass added two points in the win. Miah Weber finished with a team-high five assists. 

With the win the Titans now advance to the second round, slated for Thursday, Feb. 22. The Titans, who stand at 17-4 on the season and are ranked second in Region 4A, will face off against third ranked Elk Point Jefferson who also sit at 17-4 on the season. The two will face off at Tea Area High School at 7 p.m. Thursday night, Feb. 22. When they two faced off on Feb. 16, the Titans earned the 48-39 win. The winner of the Feb. 22 match-up will advance to the SoDak 16, with games being played Thursday, Feb. 29. 

The 2024 State A Tournament will be held at the Dacotah Bank Center in Brookings March 7, March 8 and March 9.
