Titan golfers capture State A Championship



Each morning started off on the cooler side before warming up in the early afternoon at the 2021 State A Golf Tournament held in Madison. As the weather got hot so did the Tea Area High School golfers. The Titans’ Eric Munson had a solid first day of golf as he led the leader board after day one of competition on Monday, Oct. 4. Munson shot a 74 day one total, shooting a 35 on the front nine and a 39 on the back nine. His day was highlighted with a staggering five birdies. During the second day of competition on Tuesday, Oct. 5, Munson continued to find his groove, finishing with an 84 after shooting a 41 on the front nine and a 43 on the back nine. His two day total of 158 placed him third among the top golfers in the State and earned him All-Tournament team honors.

Also claiming All-Tournament team honors at State was Tea Area’s Keeton Newborg. On Monday, Newborg shot a 42 on the front nine and a 38 on the back, highlighted with an eagle and a birdie. He finished with an 80 on Monday. On Tuesday, Oct. 5 Newborg had a great day of golf, scoring a 40 on both the front and the back nine to finish with an 80. His day two was highlighted with four birdies on the day. His two day total of 160 tied him for fifth among the State’s top golfers.

The Titans also had strong showings from Derek Anderson, Eddie Unruh and Brady Sabers. With all the Titans performing strong at State the team managed to capture the 2021 State A Championship team title. The Titans finished with a team score of 669, bettering West Central who finished with 674 to earn runner-up honors. Vermillion took third, Aberdeen Roncalli fourth and Parkston rounded out the top five.

This marks the Titans third State A golf title in school history.

For the Titans, Anderson tied for 15th after finishing with a two day total of 168. In the first day of competition, Anderson shot a 41 on the front nine and a 41 on the back. His day was highlighted with two birdies and an eagle. He finished with an 82 on the day. On Tuesday, Oct. 5 Anderson shot a 40 on the front nine and a 46 on the back to finish with an 86. He recorded an eagle on Tuesday as well.

Sabers tied for 37th at State shooting a two day total of 183. During Monday’s competition, Sabers shot a 47 on the front nine and a 46 on the back to finish with a 93. On Tuesday, Sabers finished with a 46 on the front and a 44 on the back to score a 90. He shot a birdie during the day’s play.

Unruh tied for 51 at State finishing with a two day total of 189. Unruh shot a 96 during Monday’s play with a 49 on the front nine and a 47 on the back. During day two, he finished with a 93 after shooting a 50 on the front nine and a 43 on the back. Unruh shot two birdies on day two.

Winning the State A Individual title was Sioux Falls Christian’s Kaleb Jost. He finished with a two day total of 155, shooting a 77 during round one and a 78 in round two.
