On Thursday, Jan. 22 the Tea Area High School boys’ basketball team traveled to Mitchell and used an 11-2 overtime advantage to get the 57-48 victory.

“Back in the day, the ESD Conference was known for its physicality and low-scoring slugfests. That style of play existed in the conference for decades. Our game against Mitchell was a throwback to that era. Scoring was difficult to come by and every possession was a war,” said Titan head coach Drew Weber. “To be able to respond in a game like this is a sign of a top-level team. Nothing was going to come easy and the boys just kept grinding through every up and down of the game. I am awfully proud of not just getting the win against a top team in our class, but how we had to earn it. There’s a litany of things that we need to keep working on in practice, but this was a special win in a tough environment.”

The Titans had three athletes in double figures with Mitch Grant and Grifin Wiebenga each scoring 16 points and Gavin Shawd finishing with 15. Blake Lundin and Lane Sieber each had four points and Kayden Williamson added two.

Leading the team in rebounds was Williamson pulling down six. Wiebenga, Grant, and Sieber each had four in the game and Shawd pulled down three. Wiebenga and Shawd led in assists with three each. Shawd and Wiebenga also led in steals, each recoding four. Grant and Williamson had three steals each.

The Titans will travel to Sioux Falls Lincoln on Saturday, Jan. 31 for a 7 p.m. game. Lincoln sits at 9-0 on the season. Tea Area brings a 9-2 record into the match-up. On Tuesday, Feb. 3 the team will travel to Sioux Falls O’Gorman and on Friday, Feb. 6 Tea Area will be home, hosting Sioux Falls Jefferson.
