On Friday, Dec. 12 the Tea Area High School boys’ basketball team opened their season with a home match-up against Huron. Tea Area jumped to an early 21-6 lead and led 32-24 at the half. However, in the second half Huron kept clawing their way back and in the final seconds got their first lead of the game and stole the 61-59 win from the Titans.
“This was a highly entertaining game between two very talented teams, who because of injuries on both sides, are likely to be 10-15 points better come March. I thought that we showed a lot of great things in this game, but foul trouble really hurt us, especially in the second half,” said Titan head coach Drew Weber. “I give a lot of credit to Huron, whose college-like size and strength is something that a lot of teams are going to struggle against this season and they were able to make some big shots in the second half.”
For the Titans, Gavin Shawd led the way with 26 points. Shawd went four of six from the three point line. He also had eight rebounds, one assist and three steals. Griffin Wiebenga finished with 17 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Lane Sieber had six points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Mitch Grant finished with five points, two rebounds, and three assists. Both Kayden Williamson and Caden Bohenberger had two points and Trey Severin finished with one point.
“I also give a lot of credit to our boys, many of whom were playing in their first varsity game. We did a lot of things in this game that show that we have a high ceiling, but the season is still young and a lot can change,” said Weber. “You can usually tell how good a team can be from how they improve from game one to game two, so Thursday night’s game against Brookings is a big one. Hopefully we can fill Thunder Alley with fans like we had in this one.”
The Titans are scheduled to host Brookings on Thursday, Dec. 18 in double header action with the Tea Area girls. The boys’ are set to tip-off at approximately 8 p.m.
The Titan boys will be in action on Saturday, Dec. 20 when they travel to Watertown for a 3 p.m. game.
