Tea Area High School senior Tyler Woodring made his college plans official Wednesday, Nov. 12, signing his letter of intent to wrestle for Augustana University. Woodring, one of South Dakota’s top lower-weight wrestlers, will join a strong incoming 2025–26 class announced by Augustana head wrestling coach Jason Reitmeier.

Reitmeier shared high praise for the group of 10 athletes the program is adding, noting both their talent and character.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this class,” Reitmeier said. “It’s a talented group of student-athletes who fit the culture we’ve built here at Augustana — hardworking, high-character, and competitive. They come from strong programs, love the sport, and want to be part of something bigger than themselves. This group will make an immediate impact in our room and help us continue to raise the standard of Augustana Wrestling.”

Woodring, who projects at 141 pounds for the Vikings, has been a force for Tea Area throughout his high school career. A four-year starter and two-year captain, he enters his senior season as a four-time state medalist, placing fourth, fifth, third, and winning the Class A state title at 126 pounds last season.

His junior campaign was nothing short of dominant: Woodring went a perfect 42-0 on his way to the championship. As a sophomore, he compiled a 43-4 record and finished third in the state. He won 36 matches as a freshman, earning a fifth-place medal.

Over his career, Woodring holds a remarkable 163-31 record and already ranks top five in most statistical categories in program history, including career wins, pins, takedowns, near falls, team points, and tech falls.

Tea Area head wrestling coach John Niesen praised Woodring’s work ethic, leadership, and passion.

“Tyler is a 4-time state medalist entering his senior year for the Titans and capped off his junior season with a perfect 42-0 record and the 126# Class A state title,” Niesen said. “Tyler’s been a great leader and is so much fun to be around and work with. He genuinely loves wrestling as much as anyone I’ve been around and is in his element when battling it out with his teammates.”

Niesen added that Woodring’s dedication has made a significant impact on the Tea wrestling community.

“We’re proud of his efforts, and his accomplishments certainly pay tribute to the work put in behind the scenes,” he said. “Tyler has made such a huge impact on the Tea wrestling community. Congratulations to Tyler on his commitment and best of luck at the next level – we’re glad he’s staying close to home so we can follow his collegiate career more closely as well!”

Reitmeier said the Augustana staff has followed Woodring closely over the years.

“We’ve known Ty for many years, with him being right outside of Sioux Falls in Tea, SD,” he said. “Ty continues to get better every year, and I expect this season to be no different. We really like his wide-open style and fearlessness on the mat. His positive energy is contagious—Ty will be a leader in the room. He’s going to be a fan favorite with his style of wrestling.”

Woodring is the son of Rick and Megan Woodring and plans to major in business at Augustana University.
